Sherman Construction transformed existing space into a world-class automotive testing laboratory for the growing Southeast Automotive Industry.

Sherman Construction provided preconstruction planning and interior construction services to the Clemson Real Estate Foundation and other project partners for the testing laboratory. The laboratory is located in the Center for Emerging Technologies on the CU-ICAR campus in Greenville, SC. The state-of-the-art facility provides Tier 1 automotive suppliers a location to test interior components under a wide array of parameters.

Testing services include advanced solar simulation, environmental/climate testing, and shaker/vibration testing. Some of the infrastructure in the lab will be the only equipment of its kind in the United States, and Upstate automaker BMW Manufacturing Co. will accredit the laboratory for use by its suppliers.

A core project challenge centered around constructing the testing laboratory within a Class-A office building. Unique construction, such as intricate double framed walls with isolation spaces, was executed to create sound and vibration separations between the laboratory and other office sections of the building. Four layers of drywall on the exterior face of the perimeter walls, partnered with 3 layers of QuietRock drywall on the interior face, create an appropriate testing space without interruption to adjacent offices. The shaker pit was constructed with a three foot deep inertia block totalling 85,000 pounds.
Chamber 1 comprises a vibration chamber, which features temperature and humidity control, and a shaker system, which can accommodate vertical and lateral vibration testing.
Chamber 2 features a walk-in solar chamber for OEM climate solar simulation tests, and a solar array with solar simulation that can simulate in-vehicle conditions of components commonly exposed to solar irradiation inside the cockpit.
